Can mealworms and darkling beetles hear?
Mealworms navigate their surroundings using a sense of touch and marginally developed eyesight. They do not have ears, and therefore cannot hear sounds; mealworms are similar to other worms in that they use vibrational cues in the ground. Darkling beetles also lack a true sense of hearing.
Do mealworms have eyes?
Mealworms do have eyes, however they are not like human eyes. Mealworms eyes are able to sense change in the brightness of light but still have a difficult time focusing on their surroundings. Due to them not being able to see clearly, they rely on the sense of touch from their legs and antennae to gather information about their environment.
How do mealworms breathe?
Insects, such as mealworms, have holes and tubes to gather their oxygen. These holes on the abdominal segments known as spiracles allow air to pass into the insect's body. Then from their trachea which are complex tubes allow the oxygen to reach all parts of the body. If you were to examine one of them closely under a dissecting microscope you would see these tiny spiracles leading to the outside of the body.
